O'Neil, who was still in high school times during the auditions, auditioned for Canadian Idol's 3rd season during the first months of 2005. The quality of her singing impressed jury, and she was voted into the final 100th stage. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. She was however a complete loser in both the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked by this and proclaimed to the public the fact that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil wasn't in the bottom 3 again after a series of consistently outstanding performance. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil advanced to the final two in the competition's contest, Werner predicted that the morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
